Across Five April Concerts: Jackson Browne

Jackson Browne at DeVos Hall, April 21, 2001
We wrapped up our busiest month of concerts listening to Jackson Browne at DeVos Hall. Once I got beyond the fact that Browne still has the same haircut from his debut album (and the same amount), I realized how great a treat this show would be.

On stage with seventeen guitars, each one tuned for specific songs, and a lone keyboard, Browne dug deep into his catalog for two one-hour sets. His voice isn't as powerful as it once was, but the passion is still there. First-half highlights included "For a Dancer," "Fountain of Sorrow," and "Rock Me on the Water." After an announced 15-minute intermission that took nearly twice that long, Browne returned to crank out a thrilling second set. I was surprised to hear "Lives in the Balance,"and blown away by Browne's cover of Warren Zevon's "Don't Let Us Get Sick."The concert wouldn't have been complete without "Running on Empty," but the audience appreciated one of Browne's more recent songs, "Sky Blue and Black," nearly just as much.

Not a bad month! Now we'll take May off before (at least) five shows this summer.
